Commissions for portraiture need not be fraught with pressures on the subject and the artist, so, at the outset, it is best to establish what collective expectations there are regarding the outcome. If the desired result is absolute realism, then a professional photograph is probably the better route.
However, a professional artist can bring out character traits specific to the individual and go well beyond what the photo can portray with relative inconvenience to the subject. A brief time spent in the company of the artist over a coffee and some varied photographs of the subject taken by him at the subjects chosen location are often all that is required. It is important that the subject feels relaxed and comfortable throughout. Prices start at £750 for head and shoulders, thereafter price is determined by size and media, etc.
